Reading Logs & Spelling

Please keep in mind that unfinished work that is NOT attached to this cover sheet is NOT homework. If an activity is incomplete, but not assigned as homework, your child did his or her best! Feel free to complete it for extra practice or for fun, but don't worry, it's not expected back the next day!
The goal with weekly spelling words is NOT to simply learn the words for the test on Friday. It's to learn them...forever! With pretests on Mondays to assure your child has "Good Fit" words, he or she has the bulk of the week to practice words at home. Practice should be made fun! Though it's one of the few concrete "grades" you will regularly see in first grade, I tend to discourage parents from focusing too heavily on the outcome of the weekly test. We want students to keep in mind, a test is simply a check-you can't know more than you know! Maybe let your kiddo come your way with their completed test on his or her own. Maybe wait til Saturday morning, if they don't and casually ask, "oh yeah! How did you make out on your spelling test, yesterday?" Though we are trying to expose the students to test taking procedures, we certainly don't want to cause anxiety in them. Remember, what your child can do in the peace of your very own kitchen is often much different than their performance in a classroom filled with children. As long as they are doing their best, the kiddos are fine!
We'll practice all of the following activities in class! Feel free to click on most of them & print at home!
